Armenfilm: Three lakes of deepest, darkest blue

This is funny -- I never really liked poetry, but I find translating poems and songs to be the most fun part of doing subs (unless the songs and poems in question are dumb, like most filmed songs in "The Treasure Island"). I just finished subs for another cartoon -- Armenfilm's "Three lakes of deepest, darkest blue." I kind of fumbled the last two verses by not getting the syllable count right in the translation, but I think it turned out okay anyway.

    I know exactly what you mean about translating rhymes. I guess it may have something to do with the satisfaction of unravelling a good puzzle. I myself have taken up some seemingly hopeless tasks with rhymes - for example, the Russian animated "Hobbit", and "Plasticene Crow" (although that one wasn't as hard as I thought it would be). Probably the worst was "The Box of Pencil Crayons": http://niffiwan.livejournal.com/19015.html
    Its form was ABBA ABBA ABBA, etc. The closest I could get was ABBA CBBC DBBD, etc.

  2. Thanks for the translation, I really enjoyed it. I'm a student at UC Santa Cruz working on some Russian animation translations of my own. I just found some more work by this animator, Robert Saakyants, and am really impressed. If you have the time, it would be nice to see some subs for his short, Ух ты говорящая рыба.

    The animation is spectacularly imaginative and I'm sure it would please a wide audience. I hope to see somebody sub this soon, but in any case I look forward to more of your work and the rest in our small little translating community.
